Activities in this area fall into two major areas: Design of processing system disinfection for the elimination of contaminating micro-organisms, e.g. sterilisation and chilling and freezing operations with emphasis on the kinetic modelling of micro-organism behaviour. Design, modelling and simulation of processing systems for the production of recombinant proteins from genetically engineered micro-organisms and for the production of non-specific growth factors from by-product cheese whey.

Investigations in this area ranged from laser studies of the reactions of silicon and germanium associated with micro-electronic component manufacture to studies in catalysis and the thermal pyrolysis, combustion and gasification of coal. Reaction Engineering studies of coal processing have important ramifications in the study of 'greenhouse' gas production in association with combined cycle power generation systems, catalytic decomposition of nitric oxide and engine exhaust clean-up.

The objective of the Microalgal Biotechnology Group is to further the understanding of the ecology of microalgae. This will assist with the development of commercial-scale microalgal culturing techniques for the production of bioactive compounds, aquaculture feed, fine chemicals, and renewable fuels. Additionally, environmental applications such as CO2 bioremediation, control of excessive algal growth and development of management strategies for water supply managers are investigated. The Microalgal Biotechnology Group is a part of a national research group (BEAM), which focuses on photosynthetic light utilisation efficiency and carbon fixation, chlorophyll fluorescence, biochemistry of secondary metabolites, molecular biology and photo-bioreactor design and engineering.

Entry to postgraduate coursework programs as a minimum requires a Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification from an approved institution as a qualification for entry. Some of the graduate certificates and graduate diplomas that are offered may be accepted as qualifying work for entry to a Masters program, or as professional qualifications in their own right. For further information, please see:
The Master of Software Engineering aims to provide graduates with the knowledge, tools and methods for defining software requirements, performing software design, construction, testing and maintenance tasks. Graduates gain a demonstrated ability to design and construct large software systems and are qualified to secure rewarding technical careers in the software engineering industry. Students who wish to proceed to further research study must complete an individual year-long research project in an area of software engineering instead of the usual year-long group project. Interested students should consult the program coordinator in their first year of study. Students may convert to a Master of Software Engineering from a Master of Computing and Innovation after completing the equivalent of a major in computer science. Students seeking to convert between degrees are required to seek program advice from the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, as not all courses can be counted towards the new degree.

This degree offers students the chance to specialise in cutting edge technologies aligned to their career pathways. It is suitable for engineering graduates who wish to pursue further studies, as well as engineers with relevant work experience. Aerospace engineering is focused on the development and use of new technologies and materials that are relevant to any high-tech industry including the aeronautical, space and defence industries. The Master of Engineering comprises a foundation year and an advanced studies year. The foundation year consists of a set of courses designed to ensure that students acquire a level of expertise in the relevant specialisation. The program gives students the opportunity to study technical courses at an advanced level and the opportunity to engage in a research project. An exit path will be available for students completing only the foundation year, after they satisfy a set requirement in the relevant discipline. In this case a graduate diploma will be awarded. To remain in this program, students must maintain a high grade point average (GPA) throughout their candidature.
