For further information, please see:
Urban planning is concerned with how we design, regulate and manage the cities, neighbourhoods and places in which we live our lives. As cities become larger and more complex and an increasing proportion of the world’s population lives in cities it is important that we manage their growth to provide a good quality of life for all residents, ensure employment opportunities, protect the natural and historic built heritage and ensure they are resilient in the face of natural disaster threats and climate change. Planners’ central concern is to ensure that our cities are attractive places to live and work now and that they are sustainable into the future. The location of Planning within the School of Architecture and Built Environment means that the programs emphasise the importance of the design of spaces and places. Design literate planners are keenly sought after by many employers. The Urban Planning programs prepare students for work in government or the private sector both within Australia and elsewhere in the world.

Further skills, complementary to the primary area of performance study, are developed through an individualised project with negotiated learning outcomes and modes of assessment. Teaching methodology includes weekly one-to-one lessons with performance staff.
